FLINT, MI – A local leatherworker who once received clemency from former President Barack Obama is hosting a pop-up shopping event to show off his hand-stitched bags in Flint this weekend.

Miracle McGlown, a Flint native and founder of 1:Eleven, is bringing his new take on accessories to BAU-HOUSE, a streetwear, sneaker and art retailer, located at 511 Buckham Alley in downtown Flint, from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11.

The free event will serve as the beginning of the BAU-HOUSE designer incubator program, which aims to highlight design talent within the Flint community, educate designers on retail and broaden their customer base.

Designers keep 100% of the profits from the pop-ups hosted at the BAU-HOUSE, co-owner Lee Grant Allen told MLive-The Flint Journal.

“I’m really trying to focus on offering BAU-HOUSE as an incubation space for brands and designers,” Allen said.

McGlown’s 1:Eleven products will be available for purchase at the event.

McGlown learned how to stitch leather by hand when he was serving time in prison before gaining clemency. He used to dream of making a career for himself in hand-sewn leather products.

“What people should know is that these (products) really come from hard work,” McGlown said. “I really put myself into my work like when I have a vision and bring my vision to life. … This is a big opportunity for me.”

McGlown will even be showing off his craft during the pop-up event so customers can see the effort that goes into creating each product.

“You can tell that he puts time into his sourcing, he puts time into details and what it takes to construct his bags,” Allen said. “This pop-up is going to be awesome when people are able to see the quality and the time just within this product. It’s going to fly off the shelf.”

MLive-The Flint Journal featured McGlown’s story in November 2022.

BAU-HOUSE is also hosting its first ARTWALK event of the year from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at its downtown Flint location.

Flint native Nijah Ferguson, who goes by @thaoldsoulartist on Instagram, will be showcasing “Granny’s Cry for Consciousness.”
